(meteorobs) October 8/9 1998 observation

Hello everyone,

Here is the report summary for my observation on October 8/9.
I arrived at the Almonte, ON location early in the evening to start
observing at 23:55 UT (19:55 EDT). Skies were clear all evening
except near midnight, when scattered clouds moved in from the
south. I managed to keep those clouds mostly out of my FOV to get
an obstruction factor ranging between 0% to 10%. I observed for
5 1/2 hours of effective time. One nice, very slow moving
magnitude -1 GIA and another possible GIA. The second one is not
definite and couldwell be a SPO since the velocity was a bit too fast
for me. So I called that a SPO for now. There was a healthy number of
sporadics. But some of these could be Orionids, Sigma Orionids, Arietids,
or Sept Perseids. I was not watching any of these radiants since they
were all behind me, away from my FOV. But a few very fast, long paths
flashed overhead and came from the general direction of Orion.
So it appears Orionids activity is present. In all, I saw 44
meteors. At times, the activity was real slow but it picked up at
other times for some decent activity despite moon. The vast majority
were faint (mag +4), although two nice sporadics of -1 were seen.
I also ran a camera with 50mm f/2.8, HP5 400, and *might* have caught
a 0 magnitude. If it did, it will be on the corner of the camera field.
At the end of the night, dew (and frost!) had settled over all my
gear. Anyway, it was still well worth going out to see the end
of the 1998 Draconids.
