Just let me clarify what I mean by uncontrolled...I don't mean only that
their orbits are not controlled, but in addition, it is the precise
alignment of the bird that makes the flares predictable. An offset of only
a degree or two moves the spot many miles, so unless the positions are
tightly controlled the flare timing becomes unprediactable, even if you
know the orbits, and remember there's 60+ flyin' around out there now, so
one is in your sky at all times.
Hope they let astronomers play blast the satellite to smithereens, and
leave the debris in that high ornit so no one else will try anything as
stupid :-)

I wonder. Perhaps the US Space Command would, indeed, just leave any such
uncontrolled satellites alone. But I would think they would be very
concerned about them being "uncontrolled". Perhaps they would somehow
obtain the facilities to control the birds just to keep them "in line" and
not a danger to others until some other commercial enterprise can take
over. In the best case, Space Command could make a strong case for
reestablishing the cancelled satellite-killer program(s) and put any such
uncontrolled bird out of our misery....
