17 doesn't strike me as being especially high, given that one observes
the Quadrantids best at the end of the night.  What were the rates for
the hours either side?  To be scientific and to get meaningful answers
we need quantitative data rather than subjective, "well it happened to
me during the 19xx Xxxxxids".  There will always be outliers or abnormal
events that stick out in your subjective memory, but you also have to
count all the observations, not just the abnormal ones.  Otherwise it's
a Uri Geller effect. The VMDB is there!

My experience is that the sporadics go down during a strong major-shower
maximum, at least for less experienced observers.

Concentration may be a factor.  If you're wide awake because of a steady
flux of shower meteors, you could well see more sporadics too.
