RIch,

You might have seen some bright Milky Way. Zodiacal light starts appearing
a couple of hours before twilight. On this same morning I saw it as a
bright but narrow cone (10 degrees wide at the base) reaching up almost to
Leo. Zodiacal band took over from there and covered the ecliptic over to
Gemini. My west has some city lights so I couldn't see the z band in
Taurus. My eastern semicircle is dark to the horizon.

North temperate latitudes have the best chance of seeing morning zodiacal
light in September when the ecliptic stands at the most steep angle to the
horizon before dawn. From tropical latitudes, and here, it can be seen all
year. The worst angle from South Florida is about 45 degrees to the
horizon, even then, it's quite easy to see on a clear night without haze.
