(meteorobs) What a wonderful Geminid shower!
I missed the Leonids due to rain and the fact that the nearest clear skies
were over 400 miles away from my location near Ketchum, Ok(ne of Tulsa). I
had planned to watch from my house but used the following forecast site:
http://www.arl.noaadot gov/ready/cmet.html
...(many thanks to whoever posted this to the list) and I determined that
the skies were going to be cloudy(maybe even raining, again!)
I had planned to go to Austin on Friday, so I left around noon on Thursday.
I had planned to go west of Austin until I found clear skies. I ended up on
a hill in an empty lot with a magnificent view just west of 360 on Bee Caves
Road. My friends were with me from 12:15amCST to about 3:00. They had all
left by that time as it was a little chilly and they were in the midst of
finals. I stayed and watched until I got cold and hungry. So I finally
started to count. ( I spent most of my time stunned while admiring the
show!)
In about 15 to 20 minutes I saw an additional 68. I probably saw 500 or
more that night. It was the best shower I have even seen. The last one was
the best, about 35 degrees long, 2 or 3 degrees width and very bright.
I'm so glad I joined this list. Charlie
