(meteorobs) Observation Jan 04
Upon my return to Hawaii from the mainland, I had an
opportunity to do some observing from Haleakala on Maui,
one of my favorite sites. Was a bit tired from the long
trip that day, so I just did a short half-hour session
around the time of QUA radiant rise, just to see if any
activity remained about 17 hours post-peak.
The weather was unusually clear in the islands, with no
clouds even at low elevation, so rather than drive up to
the summit and freeze, I just observed a few miles up the
highway from the Kula turnoff, at around 5500 feet. A much
more comfortable spot that's unfortunately clouded over
under more typical weather conditions.
The LM was reasonably good for a bright moon rising in the
east. I saw 4 sporadics in 30 mins, but no Quads at all.
The radiant was quite low, however. I had faint hopes of
catching a spectacular earthgrazer as in the Leonids, but
it was apparently too far from peak to get enough activity
for that.
Well, I guess its just minor showers from now on until the
Lyrids...
