(meteorobs) Video Observation Results August 2002
Results of the AKM Video Meteor Network - August 2002
=====================================================
I don't need to spend many words on the weather escapades of this summer.
For decades there don't have been as many storms, thunderstroms,
cloudburst and floodings in Germany as in summer 2002. The situation has
not been much better in the neighbour countries either.
From the astronomical point of view, August started quite promising with
a number of clear nights, but just during the Perseid maximum Germany was
almost completely clouded out. Thus, from the two most interesting nights there
are only observations from the Canaries and Australia available. Thereafter
it became obvious again how strong the weather may differ within our country:
Whereas in Aachen there was for about two weeks pure November weather
(mist-like clouds and continuous drizzle), the situation was already
clearly better at some 50 km distance. In the north-east, there was even a
stable weather system allowing observations almost every night (unless the
observers were on holiday). Even though the transparency was not always
perfect, Juergen Rendtel managed to obtain a nice observing series at that
time.
Joerg Strunk restarted the regular night sky monitoring with his Mintron
camera that was introduced last month. Currently he is constructing a
fully automated camera station. My own Mintron camera was only operated
for test purposes during the Perseids, though.
There were also a number of active observers outside Germany in the Perseid
month, so that we received the data from an overall of 14 cameras.
Clear skies in one night shortly before the Perseid maximum were used
for double-station observation in Ondrejov and Kunzak. For Ilkka Yrjola in
Finland the long summer break was also over. He, too, resumed regular
observations with his old camera and a new image intensifier. Stephen Evans
managed to move for a second time within a few weeks - at least he now
lives at an astronomically much more favourable site.
In the south, Orlando Benitez-Sanchez missed almost no night in the first
part of the month, but thereafter he unfortunately reported no further
observation. Last but not least, Steve Quirk of Australia obtained an
amazingly poor August total of 18 observing nights only... :-)
