(meteorobs) Re: Geminid Shower

David and All,

Unfortunately the moon will be a sixty percent illuminated waning gibbous on
this date rising near 2300 (11pm local standard time). This will
significantly reduce the number of meteors seen after moonrise. This may be
a good year to try to view Geminid earthgrazers, which appear as soon as it
becomes totally dark. While camping out in the desert several years ago, I
was surprised at the number of Geminid earthgrazers where visible near 1800
(6pm). I was seeing at least one every ten minutes or so. In the hour before
moonrise, the radiant will have gained sufficient altitude to produce up to
30 Geminids per hour. The situation worsens the further south one is located
as the radiant rises later in the evening and culminates at a lower
altitude.

Clear Skies!

Bob Lunsford
